Marshall Lewy grew up in Mamaroneck, New York, the son of Cheryl Winter Lewy and Glen S. Lewy. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University and then earned a Master of Fine Arts in film from Columbia University, where he concentrated in directing.
Lewy began his career as a filmmaker, writing and directing short films including Balkanization (2002) (2002) and Future Imperfect (2005) (2005) before making his feature debut with Blue State (2007), a road-trip comedy he also wrote. His second feature, California Solo (2012), which he again wrote and directed, earned him a Jury Prize at the Woodstock Film Festival (2018) and the Grand Special Prize at the Deauville Film Festival, among other festival honors. He has been married to Heather Fowler since September 20, 2008.
Over the following years Lewy moved increasingly into audio, building a substantial body of work as an executive producer at Wondery. Starting in 2018 he produced a string of true-crime and narrative podcast series there, including Dr. Death (2021) (2018), Over My Dead Body (2019) (2019), Man in the Window: The Golden State Killer (2019) (2019), The Shrink Next Door (2021) (2019), and Killer Psyche (2021) (2021), among many others. The Dr. Death (2018) podcast was adapted for television in 2021, as was The Shrink Next Door (2019) that same year, with further Dr. Death seasons following in subsequent years. His podcast work earned him an IDA Award nomination in 2019, and he received Emmy nominations in 2016 and 2025 as well as a PGA Awards nomination for the David L. Wolper Award in 2026.
In August 2025 Amazon reorganized its audio operations, folding Wondery's narrative podcast output into Audible and moving Lewy, who had been serving as chief content officer at Wondery, over to Audible. In February 2026 Audible named him Head of Content for North America, a role in which he oversees the company's original programming, including podcasts, immersive audio dramas, audiobooks, investigative series, and Audible Theater, reporting to Chief Content Officer Rachel Ghiazza.
